Unveiling the craftsmanship journey of a razor blade: four core processes forging "Chinese precision"

In the personal care industry, a small razor blade often embodies the advanced integration of material science, precision manufacturing, and process control. As one of the representative enterprises in the domestic precision razor blade manufacturing field, Jiangxi Xirui Manufacturing Co., Ltd. has established a complete technical closed loop from raw materials to finished products, relying on its systematic process capabilities and continuous innovation.

From the arrival of steel strips at the factory to the shipment of blades, Xirui’s manufacturing system revolves around four core processes: stamping and forming, heat treatment, grinding, and coating. Each process is not only a production step, but also a critical node that determines the performance boundaries of the blades.

The sharpness of a blade is not measured, but “grown” through each process.

Stamping: The starting point at the micrometer level determines the upper limit of quality “The error in the first process cannot be made up in the following ten processes.”

The quality of the blade is determined from the first process. Stamping, as the starting point of blade forming, has a direct impact on the stability of all subsequent processes due to its precision. Through long-term mold iteration, Xirui has achieved stable stamping precision within ±0.02mm, with burr height strictly below 0.015mm, and even below 0.01mm for high-end products, by combining precision progressive dies, servo stamping systems, and online visual inspection.

This highly consistent output from the first process lays a solid foundation for subsequent heat treatment and grinding.

Heat treatment: the core process that decides the outcome at 5℃ “A temperature difference of 5℃ is the dividing line between durability and chipping.”

If stamping determines “shape”, then heat treatment determines “property”. Among the up to eight stages of heat treatment, the quenching stage is considered the most challenging. The rapid cooling process after high-temperature austenitization is extremely sensitive to the temperature window, and even a deviation of 5–10℃ may lead to grain coarsening, abnormal retained austenite, or even microcracks.

Such microstructural changes will directly manifest as uneven hardness and increased brittleness of the blade, ultimately resulting in chipping or rapid passivation, significantly shortening its service life.

To this end, Xirui achieves high stability output in the heat treatment process through refined temperature control system and process parameter management.

Deep cooling and tempering: resolving the long-standing contradiction between “hardness and toughness” “Hardness and toughness are never a single choice question.”

Although the quenched blade possesses high hardness, it also exhibits significant brittleness. Xirui introduces deep cryogenic treatment at -100℃ to -120℃ to further transform the residual austenite. Combined with multiple graded tempering processes, this treatment releases internal stress and precipitates fine and dispersed carbides.

This combined process path enables the blade to maintain high hardness while significantly enhancing its toughness, achieving an optimal balance of performance. Through dual verification of HRC hardness testing and impact resistance testing, it ensures that the product remains within the optimal comprehensive performance range.

Grinding: A pivotal transition from “sharpness” to “comfort” The ultimate user experience of a blade largely depends on the grinding process. Xirui divides grinding into four stages: rough grinding, fine grinding, precision grinding, and buffing with a leather wheel. Rough grinding quickly establishes the blade’s edge contour; fine grinding optimizes the flatness and angular consistency of the blade surface; precision grinding achieves micron-level symmetry and low roughness; and buffing with a leather wheel performs ultra-precision machining using flexible abrasives.

This multi-level progressive system further enhances the smoothness and comfort of the blade beyond its sharpness.

Coating: Finding the Optimal Solution between Sharpness and Durability “Between 330℃ and 340℃, the temperature should be adjusted to ensure smoothness.”

As the final crucial step, the Teflon coating not only affects the smoothness but also directly relates to the corrosion resistance and service life of the blade. Given that the melting point of Teflon is approximately 325℃, Xirui precisely controls the sintering temperature within the range of 330–340℃. Through automated spraying, PID temperature control, and online thickness monitoring, a balance between coating adhesion and sharpness is achieved.

The precise control of this process window enables the blade to maintain its sharpness while also exhibiting longer-lasting smooth performance.

“Invisible process”: the key detail that determines success or failure In the complete process chain, cleaning and surface activation treatment after grinding are often overlooked by the outside world, yet they are the “invisible key” that affects the final quality. Residues or abnormal surface conditions will directly lead to a decrease in coating adhesion, which in turn can cause detachment and corrosion issues.

Jiangxi Xirui Manufacturing has effectively ensured the stability of the coating and the durability of the product by strengthening the process control in this link.

From manufacturing to smart manufacturing: Collaborative innovation drives industry upgrading Among numerous technological breakthroughs, Xirui views the “synergistic integration innovation of grinding, precision polishing, and Teflon sintering” as a pivotal turning point. Faced with the market’s continuous upgrading demands for “sharper, smoother, and more durable” products, traditional processes have struggled to meet multiple performance indicators.

Through independent equipment upgrades, big data optimization of process parameters, and material matching experiments, Xirui has achieved precise coordination between the micro-geometric structure of the cutting edge and the performance of the coating, significantly enhancing the overall performance of the product.

This innovation not only resolves the long-standing technical contradictions in the industry, but also marks the transformation and upgrading of enterprises from traditional contract manufacturing to high-end differentiated intelligent manufacturing.

Conclusion From micrometer-level stamping control, to the extreme management of heat treatment temperature windows, to the systematic coordination of grinding and coating, Jiangxi Xirui Manufacturing Co., Ltd. is reshaping the precision standards of blade manufacturing with its systematic capabilities.

Behind seemingly simple products lies a highly complex and continuously evolving manufacturing system. In the future, with the further integration of materials and processes, the segment of cutting blades will continue to unleash more technological potential and market value.

Xirui Manufacturing defines the precision standard of Chinese blades with every process.
